Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Thank you so much to Mrs. Maiden and Mrs. Hareas for our Fun Friday this past week! The students really enjoyed getting to decorate boxes for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is this Tuesday. Students will need a box or bag to carry home Valentine’s Cards. Please make sure their name is on the TOP of the box, as well as an opening for valentines to slip through. (If they do not have one or forget, we can supply them with a large Ziploc to hold their loot!) Also, please remember to send one for every child in your child’s class so everyone is equally included. Thank you so much! Thank you to all who have contributed so far for our snack at the Sign-Up Genius Link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4baca82eaafc1-3rdgrade1 Student names: 3A: Kerrigan, Daunte, Isobel, Sebastian, Ellie, Trevor, Noah, Jillian, Camilla, Nathan, Jacob, Sofia, Lachlan, Aiden, Samantha, Brent, Mya 3B:Amos, Blair, Evie, Kristijan, Amelia, Marianna, Richard, Stavros, Neil, Emerson, Samantha, Taijah, Mia, Leeza, Ereny, Leland, Bevin, Nala, Aviel 3C: Gregg, Arshia, T.J., Willian, Kennedy, Olivia, Sarah, Lila, Carden, LeiLanie, Taylor, Abbie, Bryce, Cole, Deana, Haley, Anthony, Gowtham Thanks to the tremendous response from our Third Grade Families wanting us to be more specific about needs, we have created an updated classroom wish list. Thank you all so much for your continued support!
Our school has accepted the challenge of helping to find a cure for Blood Cancer! We are joining over 29,000 schools across the nation to make a difference and raise as much money as we can! During February 13-17, 2017 our school will be working to reach a goal of $3000.00 . Each class will be equipped with a Classroom Collection Box and a poster chart to graph the donations. Students took home cardboard banks in their homework folders on Friday to begin collecting donations. Titans, let us join the millions of students across the country who raise funds to find cures and therapies for diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. The top fundraising classroom wins a pasta party from Olive Garden! As we have stated in previous updates, we are getting close to the FSA and we are starting to feel confident in our student’s skills! There are many things you can do as a parent to help your child out as well! · Encourage students to do their personal best! Whether they get a 1 or a 5, their best is all we can ask of them. Using the strategies they have been taught, showing their work, and focusing on the task at hand will really “show what they know!” Praise (and even reward if you’d like) behaviors that exemplify your child’s personal best. No stress here-just positive encouragement! (They will stress out enough on their own just because it is unknown and that does not help…just keep reminding them that their best is all we will ever ask from them!) · Make skill practice fun. Reading for a reading log is a great moment to really focus on your child. Curl up with a good book together and you’ll notice a lot more than if you are also doing other things simultaneously. Using daily-life situations to reinforce math and science concepts make these ideas “real” for students. Playing fun games and even just having a conversation about a new skill are ways to solidify new information as long-term knowledge. · Check out the FSA website and have your child take the practice tests several times between now and the actual tests so they are comfortable with the question types and formats. · Practice multiplication facts. The only way to memorize them is to practice them. Spend 5 minutes in the car each day or write them out with bath crayons…literally anything to practice them helps, but it has to be consistent. We will be having a timed contest at the end of the year, but it will be after FSA. · Ask the comprehension questions that were provided at the beginning of the year. Just a few each time your child reads makes a big impact. · Look for the skills on the SAT10 report that need addressing for your child. Is it measuring? Practice rulers to the 1/4th inch, telling time, measuring liquid, how many feet/inches are in a yard, draw “Gallon Guy” together, and remember they will see metric and standard measurements. Does your child struggle in language areas? Use each reading log as a way to practice proper grammar/structure (they will see this on the FSA) or have them write an actual letter to Grandma and edit it together before it is sent. These are just some ideas to help you to be more involved in your child’s first FSA experience, so have fun with it and think outside of the box whenever you can! It doesn’t have to be complicated-it just requires a little time to make your child as confident as they can be going into it. Students often feel nervous the first time, but we love to see the smiles when they finish and tell us: “We knew all of that!” Important Dates to remember: **Candy Gram Sales during the month of February sponsored by Student Council. Stay posted for more information and dates. ***Chick-fil-a Chicken Biscuits are on sale each Friday Feb. 13 – 17 Pennies for Pasta Feb. 14 Valentine's Day Feb. 20 Pro Ed Day - No school for students This week in Math: In math we will be continuing fractions. Welcome to a new week, 3rd Grade Families!
Thank you to all of our PTO meeting attendees last week. Thank you for your continued support and involvement! This week’s update will be short and sweet, but if you missed last week’s we ask that you please read it as it contains very important information. This week in Math: There will not be a Tenmarks assignment as we are doing a couple in class and I would like students to have a break. They are always welcome to access Tenmarks Jam Sessions and Mobymax math for extra computer time they may have at home. This week we are focusing on the foundations of fractions, so if you have a pizza, chocolate bar, etc. it would be terrific to talk about fractions with them at home. This week in Social Studies: We will be taking a test on Unit 2 Lesson 3 on Friday. Remember that students are welcome to use their SS packet as a reading log. This week in ELA: the students will continue working on how paragraphs connect to each other by practicing comparing and contrasting skills. For homework, the students will complete two reading logs, Social Studies reading comprehension homework, and Spelling activities. This week in Science: In Science, we are continuing to work on matter. We have worked with the states of matter and their properties. Now we will focus on the types of changes matter can have including chemical changes. Textbook pgs 418-420. There will be a quiz on Friday. This week in Health: Students will be learning about the importance of exercise. They will continue working on their exercise posters. Have a wonderful week! The Third Grade Team Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Happy New Year! It has been a wonderful first week back to school! The students were terrific and ready to learn after their mid-year break. Thank you for sending them back to us so eager to restart the second half of their year! Battle of the Books began this week and is going strong! It is so exciting to see the students really getting into the reading already! Thank you for encouraging them, listening to them read, take notes, and organize their reading log summaries! This is a huge event for our 3rd graders, and it is a lot of fun for those who participate. If you have not seen your child’s black Battle of the Books folder, please ask them for it. There is a parent letter inside. Dress Code: As the weather tends to get a bit chilly this time of the year and we have entered Q3, a friendly reminder regarding two important items: Cold Weather Dress Code & Student Attendance from the Plato Academy Student – Parent Handbook. We thank you for your commitment. Cold Weather Uniform Guidelines: ● A solid white, blue, or red undershirt (such as a turtleneck) may be worn under the school polo or school shirt. ● Long-sleeve school uniform polo is available for purchase from Risse Brothers. ● Only the red school uniform jacket, hooded sweatshirt, or sweater bearing the Plato Academy logo may be worn in school during class time. Non-school jackets may be worn to school, but must be taken off in classrooms. ● Girls may wear solid white, red, or navy tights or leggings under their uniform shorts or skorts. The Third Grade Team Dear parents,
Tomorrow students will be taking their test on light and heat energy. I have created some review questions they can work on to help them prepare. The link is attached: http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=light-and-heat-test-review For this quiz, if they don't input the exact words I use the website may mark it as wrong. If their answer reflects the answer that I put, then they are fine. Additionally, up until now, students were adjusting to using their textbook for quizzes and tests so if they received below an 80% I would allow them to go back and fix their answers for 1/2 credit. Now that it is December students have had enough time to become adjusted to the format of the tests. I wanted to make you aware that I will not continuing with this policy. When the students hand their tests in, that will be the grade they receive. Please let me know if you have any questions! Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Thank you veterans! We hope you enjoyed today’s performance and we thank you for your service! Students are already looking forward to Great American Teach In. Thank you to all of our volunteers. See you Wednesday! We are really hitting our groove and students impress us every day with how much they have learned in such a short time and with their excitement to learn as well! Now that they have become familiar with the curriculum and procedures, we are working on building stamina and developing time management. You can read some great tips that we will use in our classrooms and that can be mirrored at home here: http://www.scilearn.com/blog/teaching-persistence-how-to-build-student-stamina and http://mamaot.com/tips-for-teaching-kids-time-management-planning-and-organization/ Thank you to our Fun Friday parents! We apologize, but we are unable to hold impromptu meetings without an appointment. Thank you for understanding. We are still scheduling Great American Teach-In for Nov 16th and still have a little bit of room left for parent volunteers! The Third Grade Team Letter from Mrs. Hauser to teachers explaining Fall Festival activities (Please reach out to Mrs. Hauser with any questions.) Ignore the first part, as the 3rd grade basket theme was already selected by our awesome parents coordinating the basket.: Our biggest fun time of the year where families and teachers come together. We are encouraging you all to be a part of this year’s awesome fest fun! And need you to encourage our families too! Pick your theme and ask the parents to help fill up the baskets! Ask a few parents to help organize this for you. We as a P.T.O. are about joining hands and helping together. Can choose to divide one basket into two by doing a boy themed basket and a themed girl basket or simply doing one big basket. If the price of the basket is over a little over 600.00 - 700.00 you may want to split it. Again involving the parents are a blessing! The best project yet is aimed for parent involvement, gives the opportunity to be creative and a part of their child’s experience here at Plato while making great memories to last a life time! A class project! It includes every child in that grade. That is the key. It will be auctioned or raffle at fall fest. I have seen these done at many schools and are extremely popular and most sort after! The class project involving every classmate is what make this so special. For some examples, a flower pot with everything child’s hand print with their name written next to it and the date. Or a surf board with every child’s foot print with name and date on it and then shellac applied over it. It can be tiles with every child’s drawing on it and name and date put together to frame a mirror or to make a table or simply one big picture to hang on a wall. These projects are priceless! I had a friend that made a monopoly board using the children names as streets made out of wood that sold for over $3,000! You just never know what amazing projects the parents will come up with. Since this is a volunteer thing and it’s new to us, it is okay if the parents are not quick to take this on this year, but we would like to see this become a thing for us! It makes our hearts melt thinking about these projects. We would like for you to ask what parent(s) would like to create this for their child’s class for the fall fest Nov 4th. I am sure with set times, It can be done maybe at lunch, gym or art. The parent(s) can come in and work on this to get those foot prints/ hand prints etc. Maybe the art teacher can be of some assistance. If you or any parents have any question feel free to call me @ 727-943-9388 Deborah Hauser. No problem with giving my number out. Thank you for all you do Teachers! And for making this year’s Fall fest event awesome! Sincerely, Mrs. Deborah Hauser
Dear 3rd Grade families, Thank you to all of our chaperones who helped make our field trip to the Morean Arts Center so wonderful! We all had a great time learning about all of the art and exploring how glass is made! We have been having a blast with the Fun Fridays we have had so far! 3rd grade parents ROCK! Fun Friday is typically when parents design an activity for the classes, bring it in, and run the activity. It lasts about 20-25 minutes and is usually something like a craft, experiment, or project (a lot of people research on Pinterest or get something premade on Oriental Trading). Really, the only limit is your imagination! We have done everything from kite flying to painting to making picture frames to creating a treat (dipped pretzel rods, dirt cups, etc.) and everything in between! Record all of the work you put into this as you can receive volunteer hours for planning, shopping/organizing the activity, and the time spent in class. It does need to be enough for up to 54 kids, which is why we are asking for two parents to split it up and help share the cost and because we will need a parent for each hosting classroom. (We can connect you with another parent as dates are selected.) We know you love to be involved and we love to reward our students’ awesomeness! The dates for Fun Fridays are below. Please let us know via email if you’d like to sign up and a big THANK YOU to those who have already: Date: Parent Volunteer 1 Parent Volunteer 2 10/21 Mrs. Taravella Mrs. Brenner 11/4 Mr. Sokolowski Mrs. Sokolowski 11/18 Mrs. Hernandez Mrs. Armstrong 12/2 Mrs. Stegura Mrs. Glaser 1/13 Mr. Manninen Ms. Jones 1/27 Mrs. Aja Mrs. Michaud Thank you so much to all of our families who have taken a “wish” from outside our classrooms or from our websites and fulfilled them, and to those who have donated through PTO class adoptions. You are appreciated so much! A special thank you to: The Bailey Family, The Alonso Family,The Sokolowski Family, The Armstrong Family, and The Sevelin Family. (If you have donated and are not listed here, that means we have not been notified yet, so please let us know!) Homework and class info for next week: This week in ELA: (English Language Arts/Reading & Writing Spelling words and activities can be found here: http://sawyertracy.weebly.com/spelling.html ELA: The hard work of all of the students on their book projects was very evident. Stop by and see all of the projects displayed in our hallway! The skills that the students practiced on the book project are skills that they will continue to practice throughout the school year to help them reach mastery. Spelling City has been a great addition to our ELA classroom. Students are now taking all of their spelling tests and pretests on Spelling City. Parents can log in with the student username and password to find out their test scores the day of the test. You can also see which words they may have spelling incorrectly. Remember students can continue to complete spelling assignments on paper OR do the activities on Spelling City. I always assign more than enough so that they have a choice on which ones they want to practice with for their spelling homework. Our first 3rd grade Reading Portfolio assessment is coming up on October 26th & 27th. It is crucial that your student is in class in order to be prepared for these tests and must be present during the testing window. Students should have a good night of rest before the test and a healthy breakfast the day of the test. Encourage your child to relax and do a great job using all the strategies they have been practicing in class. Scores will be sent home within a couple weeks of testing after tests have been scored. HOMEWORK CHANGE: Students will only need to complete TWO Reading Log Entries. Instead, they will bring home Social Studies homework to allow them more time to interact with their lessons and continue practicing non-fiction reading skills. Social Studies will be sent home on Mondays and due on Wednesdays. This week in Math: Important Update: Students may do only even numbered problems on their math homework on the nights that they have science homework in an effort to alleviate some of their workload that evening. ***Please make sure to look over the homework to make sure that is sufficient practice and that they show understanding on the material. If you determine that more practice is needed, you are always welcome to assist your child in completing the other questions.*** In math we will be learning new information about area (squares, rectangles, irregular shapes, & triangles-lessons 6-1 to 6-7), we will review all old material. For our test grade next week we will take a Benchmark Assessment on Topics 1-4, which we have learned and reviewed in depth for quite a while. We are excited to see our students show what they know! Feel free to have students look back or practice these lessons, videos, and skills before the assessment. This assessment will be taken online and will be part of their math records for the year. Please continue practicing multiplication facts at home and consider things like multiplication.com as an additional resource. The Tenmarks assignment due by Friday is: Identity and Zero Property. The following info, as well as HW pages, is available at my website at harveymelissa.weebly.net: Please check student red folders for homework going home Monday-Thursday, and remember that Pearson can be used to obtain HW in case forgotten at school at www.pearsonrealize.com when they are workbook pages, which from now on will normally be the case. Sign in and then select the green box for “enVision Math” under the green circle that says “Programs.” Then select the topic: this is the first digit in the lesson number. For instance, for Lesson 1-4 you would click on Topic 1. Next, click on the box with that night’s lesson number. This will take you to all available resources for this lesson. Students can watch 2 videos to remind them of skills: “Visual Learning” and “Another Look.” They can access the textbook to see the homework page (no need to print it out, just write answers on a paper) and sometimes there are even some fun games available to practice a skill. This week in Social Studies: Social Studies we are learning about the regions around the U.S., specifically Mexico. This week in Science: In Science, we are working with “Animals in Their Environments” and “Animal Adaptations.” This material can be found in Chapter 3 Lessons 2 & 3. Quiz next Friday. I have found an online edition of the textbook. It does not match up exactly regarding page numbers but the information is the same! For this online edition, the information we are working with can be found on p 118-140. Follow this link. I used Firefox and chrome, both worked fine. http://www.glencoe.com/ebooks/science/9780022877446/ This week in Health: Students will continue learning about what a healthy diet consists of. Which foods help us stay healthy and which ones are bad. **Please check Mrs. Parker's Emails or the School Website for upcoming events!!** ______________________________________________ Visit our websites for homework, information unique to each class, links, and announcements!
