Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Thank you so much to Mrs. Maiden and Mrs. Hareas for our Fun Friday this past week! The students really enjoyed getting to decorate boxes for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is this Tuesday. Students will need a box or bag to carry home Valentine’s Cards. Please make sure their name is on the TOP of the box, as well as an opening for valentines to slip through. (If they do not have one or forget, we can supply them with a large Ziploc to hold their loot!) Also, please remember to send one for every child in your child’s class so everyone is equally included. Thank you so much! Thank you to all who have contributed so far for our snack at the Sign-Up Genius Link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4baca82eaafc1-3rdgrade1 Student names: 3A: Kerrigan, Daunte, Isobel, Sebastian, Ellie, Trevor, Noah, Jillian, Camilla, Nathan, Jacob, Sofia, Lachlan, Aiden, Samantha, Brent, Mya 3B:Amos, Blair, Evie, Kristijan, Amelia, Marianna, Richard, Stavros, Neil, Emerson, Samantha, Taijah, Mia, Leeza, Ereny, Leland, Bevin, Nala, Aviel 3C: Gregg, Arshia, T.J., Willian, Kennedy, Olivia, Sarah, Lila, Carden, LeiLanie, Taylor, Abbie, Bryce, Cole, Deana, Haley, Anthony, Gowtham Thanks to the tremendous response from our Third Grade Families wanting us to be more specific about needs, we have created an updated classroom wish list. Thank you all so much for your continued support!
Our school has accepted the challenge of helping to find a cure for Blood Cancer! We are joining over 29,000 schools across the nation to make a difference and raise as much money as we can! During February 13-17, 2017 our school will be working to reach a goal of $3000.00 . Each class will be equipped with a Classroom Collection Box and a poster chart to graph the donations. Students took home cardboard banks in their homework folders on Friday to begin collecting donations. Titans, let us join the millions of students across the country who raise funds to find cures and therapies for diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. The top fundraising classroom wins a pasta party from Olive Garden! As we have stated in previous updates, we are getting close to the FSA and we are starting to feel confident in our student’s skills! There are many things you can do as a parent to help your child out as well! · Encourage students to do their personal best! Whether they get a 1 or a 5, their best is all we can ask of them. Using the strategies they have been taught, showing their work, and focusing on the task at hand will really “show what they know!” Praise (and even reward if you’d like) behaviors that exemplify your child’s personal best. No stress here-just positive encouragement! (They will stress out enough on their own just because it is unknown and that does not help…just keep reminding them that their best is all we will ever ask from them!) · Make skill practice fun. Reading for a reading log is a great moment to really focus on your child. Curl up with a good book together and you’ll notice a lot more than if you are also doing other things simultaneously. Using daily-life situations to reinforce math and science concepts make these ideas “real” for students. Playing fun games and even just having a conversation about a new skill are ways to solidify new information as long-term knowledge. · Check out the FSA website and have your child take the practice tests several times between now and the actual tests so they are comfortable with the question types and formats. · Practice multiplication facts. The only way to memorize them is to practice them. Spend 5 minutes in the car each day or write them out with bath crayons…literally anything to practice them helps, but it has to be consistent. We will be having a timed contest at the end of the year, but it will be after FSA. · Ask the comprehension questions that were provided at the beginning of the year. Just a few each time your child reads makes a big impact. · Look for the skills on the SAT10 report that need addressing for your child. Is it measuring? Practice rulers to the 1/4th inch, telling time, measuring liquid, how many feet/inches are in a yard, draw “Gallon Guy” together, and remember they will see metric and standard measurements. Does your child struggle in language areas? Use each reading log as a way to practice proper grammar/structure (they will see this on the FSA) or have them write an actual letter to Grandma and edit it together before it is sent. These are just some ideas to help you to be more involved in your child’s first FSA experience, so have fun with it and think outside of the box whenever you can! It doesn’t have to be complicated-it just requires a little time to make your child as confident as they can be going into it. Students often feel nervous the first time, but we love to see the smiles when they finish and tell us: “We knew all of that!” Important Dates to remember: **Candy Gram Sales during the month of February sponsored by Student Council. We must send tests into the county and wait for the county to let us know results. I will definitely update all parents as soon as I know. I was encouraged to see students using their reading and writing strategies while testing. This week for homework, the students will have two reading logs and three spelling activities. In class we will continue to review standards. This week we will continue working on comparing and contrasting key details of two texts. This week in Science: We will be reviewing for our Unit test for States of Matter. This will include information about states of matter, physical and chemical changes, and magnetism.
