Welcome to a new week, 3rd Grade Families!
Thank you to all of our PTO meeting attendees last week. Thank you for your continued support and involvement! This week’s update will be short and sweet, but if you missed last week’s we ask that you please read it as it contains very important information. This week in Math: There will not be a Tenmarks assignment as we are doing a couple in class and I would like students to have a break. They are always welcome to access Tenmarks Jam Sessions and Mobymax math for extra computer time they may have at home. This week we are focusing on the foundations of fractions, so if you have a pizza, chocolate bar, etc. it would be terrific to talk about fractions with them at home. This week in Social Studies: We will be taking a test on Unit 2 Lesson 3 on Friday. Remember that students are welcome to use their SS packet as a reading log. This week in ELA: the students will continue working on how paragraphs connect to each other by practicing comparing and contrasting skills. For homework, the students will complete two reading logs, Social Studies reading comprehension homework, and Spelling activities. This week in Science: In Science, we are continuing to work on matter. We have worked with the states of matter and their properties. Now we will focus on the types of changes matter can have including chemical changes. Textbook pgs 418-420. There will be a quiz on Friday. This week in Health: Students will be learning about the importance of exercise. They will continue working on their exercise posters. Have a wonderful week! The Third Grade Team

Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Happy New Year! It has been a wonderful first week back to school! The students were terrific and ready to learn after their mid-year break. Thank you for sending them back to us so eager to restart the second half of their year! Battle of the Books began this week and is going strong! It is so exciting to see the students really getting into the reading already! Thank you for encouraging them, listening to them read, take notes, and organize their reading log summaries! This is a huge event for our 3rd graders, and it is a lot of fun for those who participate. If you have not seen your child’s black Battle of the Books folder, please ask them for it. There is a parent letter inside. Dress Code: As the weather tends to get a bit chilly this time of the year and we have entered Q3, a friendly reminder regarding two important items: Cold Weather Dress Code & Student Attendance from the Plato Academy Student – Parent Handbook. We thank you for your commitment. Cold Weather Uniform Guidelines: ● A solid white, blue, or red undershirt (such as a turtleneck) may be worn under the school polo or school shirt. ● Long-sleeve school uniform polo is available for purchase from Risse Brothers. ● Only the red school uniform jacket, hooded sweatshirt, or sweater bearing the Plato Academy logo may be worn in school during class time. Non-school jackets may be worn to school, but must be taken off in classrooms. ● Girls may wear solid white, red, or navy tights or leggings under their uniform shorts or skorts. Thank you to our Fun Friday parents! Below is our current schedule: Date: Parent Volunteer 1 Parent Volunteer 2 1/13 Mr. Manninen Ms. Jones 1/27 Mrs. Aja Mrs. Michaud 2/10 Mrs. Hareas Mrs. Maiden 2/24 Homework and class info for next week: This week in ELA: (English Language Arts/Reading & Writing) In ELA, we began working on Module D. In this module, the students will be working on describing connections in their texts with comparison, cause & effect, and sequencing. They will also learn to compare and contrast main points and key details which are presented in two texts that are on the same topic. In writing, the students will continue to build upon their opinion writing skills by developing essays with opinions that have evidence based on texts. For homework, the students will have social studies, two reading logs, and spelling activities. The Social Studies homework is an extension of reading and being used to reinforce comprehension skills. I have noticed that several students are not using evidence from the Social Studies text to write their answers. Please review their homework to ensure they are doing it correctly. Spelling words & activities: http:// sawyertracy.weebly.com/ spelling.html This week in Math: In math we will continue discussing area, graphs, all old material, addition and subtraction, rounding, estimating sums, 3-digits, inverse operations to check work, addition patterns, and using partial products to subtract (Feel free to access Pearsonrealize.com and take a look at those lessons.) Please continue practicing multiplication facts at home and consider things like multiplication.com as an additional resource. We will take a test on Thursday, which will cover any items we have done this year. This week’s Tenmarks HW assignment is “Fractions and Length Models.” This week in Science: In Science, we are continuing to work on matter and states of matter, but we will be focusing on measuring mass, volume, and temperature. There will be a quiz on Friday. This week in Health: Students will be learning about the importance of exercise.
