Dear Awesome 3rd Grade Parents,
October is National Bullying Awareness Month. How would you feel if you were constantly told that you were not good enough? If people talked behind your back or on the internet about you? National Bullying Awareness Month addresses these things with our students and reinforces positive interactions as both a person of good character who does not bully, and promotes the value of those who choose not to be bystanders and allow others to be unfairly put down. This is a terrific time to talk to your child about how important these values are to you as well as they look to you as great examples, and these are wonderful conversation topics around the dinner table! (Remember that we are careful about what we call “bullying” and “cyberbullying” as they don’t mean the same thing as a disagreement or argument that students can work through together.) Morean Arts Center Field Trip Oct. 11: Reminder that forms and payment are due on Wednesday, October 5th. Students will need a bagged lunch that day. We will take chaperones/drivers on a first-come basis and all who sign up after that will be placed on the “back-up driver list” and will be asked to fill in if a driver cancels. We have been having a blast with the Fun Fridays we have had so far! 3rd grade parents ROCK! Fun Friday is typically when parents design an activity for the classes, bring it in, and run the activity. It lasts about 20-25 minutes and is usually something like a craft, experiment, or project (a lot of people research on Pinterest or get something premade on Oriental Trading). Really, the only limit is your imagination! We have done everything from kite flying to painting to making picture frames to creating a treat (dipped pretzel rods, dirt cups, etc.) and everything in between! Record all of the work you put into this as you can receive volunteer hours for planning, shopping/organizing the activity, and the time spent in class. It does need to be enough for up to 54 kids, which is why we are asking for two parents to split it up and help share the cost and because we will need a parent for each hosting classroom. (We can connect you with another parent as dates are selected.) We know you love to be involved and we love to reward our students’ awesomeness! The dates for Fun Fridays are below. Please let us know via email if you’d like to sign up and a big THANK YOU to those who have already: Date: Parent Volunteer 1 Parent Volunteer 2 10/7 Mrs. Stegura Mrs. Nguyen 10/21 Mrs. Taravella Mrs. Brenner 11/4 Mr. Sokolowski Mrs. Sokolowski 11/18 Mrs. Hernandez Ms. Jones 12/2 Mrs. Stegura Mrs. Glaser 1/13 Mr. Manninen 1/27 Thank you so much to all of our families who have taken a “wish” from outside our classrooms or from our websites and fulfilled them, and to those who have donated through PTO class adoptions. You make it possible to for our classrooms to run smoothly through all of the little “extras” from classroom printer ink used to replace lost homework quickly to an electric pencil sharpener that students use each morning to prepare their pencils for a day of learning ahead to rewards for our amazing students! You are appreciated so much! A special thank you to: The Bailey Family, The Alonso Family,The Sokolowski Family, The Armstrong Family, and The Sevelin Family. (If you have donated and are not listed here, that means we have not been notified yet, so please let us know!) Homework and class info for next week: This week in ELA: (English Language Arts/Reading & Writing Spelling words and activities can be found here: http://sawyertracy.weebly.com/spelling.html ELA: In reading we are continuing to practice finding the main idea and key details. We are also writing an essay and learning about the different stages of the writing process. Currently we are working on our rough drafts and will be completing our first essay this week. For homework, the students should continue to complete their Book Projects. Projects are due Friday, October 7th along with the rough drafts. There are photos of a sample Book Project on my website under the homework tab for those who would like to see an example. In Spelling, I am making some homework changes. Effective today, students will take a PRE-test on the new spelling words on Fridays. Students who get a 100% on the PRE-test will no longer have to complete spelling homework for that coming week or take the final test on Friday. Students who get an A (missing 1-2 words) will no longer have to complete the spelling homework for that coming week but will retake the final test to try to improve their grade. The higher grade will be recorded in gradebook. Again, there are NO READING LOGS due this week This week in Math: Important Update: Students may do only even numbered problems on their math homework on the nights that they have science homework in an effort to alleviate some of their workload that evening. ***Please make sure to look over the homework to make sure that is sufficient practice and that they show understanding on the material. If you determine that more practice is needed, you are always welcome to assist your child in completing the other questions.*** Math- We will continue to review all previous material and there will be a test next Wednesday covering anything we have learned and completed HW on this year. We will also be covering new material from lessons 5-3 to 5-7, which is still covering multiplication and division strategies, reasoning, properties, etc. (Feel free to access Pearsonrealize.com and take a look at those lessons.) Please continue using flashcards on the way to and from school and help students with memorizing the facts so they come faster. Another thing we find challenging is differentiating the Associative and Commutative Properties, so drilling these will help a lot as well. The Tenmarks assignment due by Friday is: The Associative Property The following info, as well as HW pages, is available at my website at harveymelissa.weebly.net: Please check student red folders for homework going home Monday-Thursday, and remember that Pearson can be used to obtain HW in case forgotten at school at www.pearsonrealize.com when they are workbook pages, which from now on will normally be the case. Sign in and then select the green box for “enVision Math” under the green circle that says “Programs.” Then select the topic: this is the first digit in the lesson number. For instance, for Lesson 1-4 you would click on Topic 1. Next, click on the box with that night’s lesson number. This will take you to all available resources for this lesson. Students can watch 2 videos to remind them of skills: “Visual Learning” and “Another Look.” They can access the textbook to see the homework page (no need to print it out, just write answers on a paper) and sometimes there are even some fun games available to practice a skill. This week in Social Studies: Social Studies we are learning about the U.S. regions. We will have a test on this material this Tuesday. This week in Science: We will be having our first Chapter Test next Wednesday 10/5. The chapter test will include lessons 1-4 in the textbook: Living and Non-living things, Plant Structures, Animals and their Parts, and Classifying animals. There will be no homework this week for science because I would like students to focus and prepare for their science test. I have made a review quiz if you would like to work on it with your child over the weekend. Please follow this link to access the quiz: https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=mty5odaxnggnhc A friendly reminder that homework comes home once a week, so please watch for that to come home. All quizzes and tests for science will be open book format. This means that the students will have their textbook during their text/ quiz and will need to find evidence from the text to support their answers. Since the tests and quizzes are open book, if your child is doing well you may not want to add any extra work at home. However, if you feel that your child is struggling or in need of extra preparation, please let me know and I will have them either bring home a textbook the night before or the weekend before to study with you at home. Please send Ms. Eisenbacher an email to let her know if you would like either of these options. I will also post pictures of each textbook page we have been learning from on my website so you will have access to that as well if your child does not bring a textbook home. (As some parents have asked, I am including information to obtain a book to leave at home. If you would prefer to not have your child carry the book back and forth, the ISBN number is 9780022880071 and many are available used online for as low as $40. Please let me know if you purchase a book to keep at home and I will not ask your child to take theirs home on homework days.) This week in Health: Students will continue learning about what a healthy diet consists of. Which foods help us stay healthy and which ones are bad. ______________________________________________ Visit our websites for homework, information unique to each class, links, and announcements! (We know this is the first year for you visiting different sites, but students will be switching grades from now on so it’s important that they learn this skill sooner rather than later-Thank you!) Dear Awesome 3rd Grade Parents, We hope you have a great weekend. It is the first weekend of Fall! We do have a few important notifications this week: As you have noticed, we are sending home tests and quizzes as they are graded. We ask that those sent home that do not require a signature be taken out of the red folders. Those attached to the agenda page that request a parent signature should be left attached to the agenda page so we know where to look for those returned papers. (Feel free to make copies, take pictures, etc. of these as they will be kept by us for ongoing planning needs.) Thank you so much for your help in this housekeeping matter as it will help us organizationally. Our first 3rd grade fieldtrip is coming up! For this, and all fieldtrips, we can take only a limited number of chaperones/drivers on each trip. This alleviates parking issues and other issues that may detract from the students’ experiences that come with extra bodies in the spaces we are going to, so we hope that you understand. (Oftentimes, limits are placed by the locations we visit as well.) We will take chaperones/drivers on a first-come basis and all who sign up after that will be placed on the “back-up driver list” and will be asked to fill in if a driver cancels. Our first fieldtrip will be to the Morean Arts Center and forms will come home next week. We have completed a lot of beginning of year assessing and have some grades on the books now, so we are currently scheduling conferences with parents (students do not need to attend unless specified). We may meet with you as a team or individually. Please allow us some time to get to everyone, but we are excited to see you all! Please keep an eye on student agendas for dates and times. Thank you! We invite our dads who don’t normally take their children to school (and of course, those who do) to do so on Wednesday, September 28th. (If Dad is unavailable, fill-ins are welcome!) Come upstairs between 8:15 and 8:40 and take the “Dads Take Your Child to School Day Pledge.” From the Florida Dept. Of Education: Dads Take Your Child to School Day More than 30 years of research supports the belief that a positive relationship endures between increased family engagement and student academic success. Additional research suggests that when fathers are actively involved in their child’s education, students:

November 21-25 Thanksgiving/Fall Break Homework and class info for next week: This week in ELA: (English Language Arts/Reading & Writing) Spelling words and activities can be found here: http://sawyertracy.weebly.com/spelling.html ELA (Language Arts): This week we began concentrating nonfiction/informational text. Students are learning how to identify the main idea of a text and how authors reveal more information through text features. We will be continuing to learn and practice this the next few weeks. In Writing the students will begin learning how to write informational essays with an introduction, body, and a conclusion. This week the students should be reading their book and beginning their first draft of their File Folder Book Project. There will be NO reading logs due on Friday. Spelling homework for Unit 7 will still be due on Friday. Homework Tip for Reading Logs: If your child seems to be spending a long time completing their reading log entries, try this strategy. Give them a sticky note with the sentence starters of "First..., Next..., Then..., After that..., and Finally..." (This is a strategy we have been using in class.) Then ask them how long they think it will take them to complete these five sentences about what they read. Set a timer for that amount of time. I would suggest somewhere around 15-20 minutes. Then play Beat the Clock. Begin the timer and have your child try to Beat the Clock and complete the reading log entry before the timer goes off. If they end up having time left over, then create an incentive such as having that many minutes of extra game time, etc.. Turn it into a fun challenge that they have to beat. This week in Math: Math- We will continue to review all previous material and there will be a quiz next Thursday covering Lesson 3. (Students need to know vocabulary and part of the quiz will be taken on the computer. There are a couple of “Quiz Practices” on Pearson Realize that are 5 questions each if students would like to practice taking them online. (This was not very successful when we tried it last time, but this grade will count as we have already had a “trial run” in class.) I will also attach a sheet to this email that can be used to study the unit. These are optional and are not counted as homework. We will also be covering new material from lessons 4-7 to 5-2, which is still covering multiplication and division strategies, reasoning, properties, etc. (Feel free to access Pearsonrealize.com and take a look at those lessons as well.) Now would be a great time to break out the flashcards on the way to and from school and start memorizing the facts so they come faster. The Tenmarks assignment due by Friday is: The Commutative Property The following info, as well as HW pages, is available at my website at harveymelissa.weebly.net: Please check student red folders for homework going home Monday-Thursday, and remember that Pearson can be used to obtain HW in case forgotten at school at www.pearsonrealize.com when they are workbook pages, which from now on will normally be the case. This week in Science: We are continuing Ch 1 Lessons 3 Animals and their parts. Next week we will move into Ch 1 Lesson 4: classifying animals. Quiz next Friday on classifying animals. A friendly reminder that homework comes home once a week, so please watch for that to come home. All quizzes and tests for science will be open book format. Thank YOU for all you do! Dear 3rd Grade Parents, Can you believe it?! We have been in school for a month now. It doesn’t seem possible. The time has flown by! Thank you for your continual support in making this a successful 3rd grade year for all of our students. We couldn’t do it without you. Today we enjoyed meeting and visiting with all our grandparents to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. Grandparents have such an influential role in their grandchildren’s lives. It’s an honor to take a moment to show them how much they mean to us. Thank you for coming! We are entering the 2nd week of our Fall fundraiser. Thank you for selling and helping earn dollars that can continue to help our students reach their full learning potential. Attached to this email is a pdf file with more information regarding this fundraiser. PTO will pass out Space Buddies on Monday and Tuesday at a table near the front gate. Fun Fridays are filling up! Please let us know via email if you’d like to sign up and a big THANK YOU to those who have already: Date: Parent Volunteer 1 Parent Volunteer 2 9/23 Mrs. Maiden Mrs. Hareas 10/7 Mrs. Stegura 10/21 11/4 Mrs. Sokolowski Mrs. Sokolowski 11/18 Mrs. Hernandez 12/2 Mrs. Stegura Visit our websites for information unique to each class, links, and announcements! There will be a spelling test on Unit 5 on Friday. Students should read 20 minutes per night in independent reading. This should be reading from a book of choice on their level. It is recommended that they read aloud to parents/adult and may read 2 nights fiction and 2 nights non-fiction. In class we are completing Unit 1 in Reading and will be taking a reading assessment. In Unit 2 we will be switching to non-fiction text and learning to identify the main idea and key details of a text. (These are terrific things to discuss with your child during nightly reading time to support their learning at home.) In writing we will be learning to write informative essays. This week in Math: Math- We will continue to review all previous material. We will take the missed test from this past week on Monday and there will be the normal quiz next Thursday covering material from Topic 2 only. (Feel free to access Pearsonrealize.com and take a look at those lessons.) We will also be covering new material from lessons 3-6 to 4-2, which is still covering multiplication strategies, reasoning, properties, etc. Now would be a great time to break out the flashcards on the way to and from school and start memorizing the facts so they come faster. The Tenmarks assignment due by Friday is: Please check student red folders for homework going home Monday-Thursday, and remember that Pearson can be used to obtain HW in case forgotten at school at www.pearsonrealize.com when they are workbook pages, which from now on will normally be the case. This week in Social Studies: Social Studies will review maps, globes, continents, and oceans (Unit 1, Lesson 1) We will have a test on Tuesday. This week in Science: We continue to study the growth of a plant, as well as how to classify different plants. Students will have a science test next Friday. A friendly reminder that homework comes home once a week, so please watch for that to come home. All quizzes and tests for science will be open book format. Please let me know if you purchase a book to keep at home and I will not ask your child to take theirs home on homework days.) It is imperative that students have their books at school every day. If one goes home, please make sure it comes back on the next school day. Thank you so much for your help with this. This week in Health: Students will be learning about what a healthy diet consists of. Which foods help us stay healthy and which ones are bad. Thank YOU for all you do! The Third Grade Team Last Friday, students were supposed to have a quiz. Due to the weather, I have moved the quiz to this Friday 9/9. It will focus on photosynthesis, and will be open book format. If you feel your child is struggling and needs a textbook on Thursday night to review material, please send me an email and I will be happy to send one home. I have also posted the textbook pages here, so you can easily view them on the computer as well.
Dear Amazing 3rd Grade Parents,
We hope everyone was able to stay safe and dry yesterday. Have an amazing extra long weekend with family and friends celebrating Labor Day and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday! Thank you to the PTO for organizing the fundraiser that began this week. Students are excited and we know that every dollar earned is one that goes toward the betterment of our school to the benefit of our kids. This looks like a great fundraiser with some very cool items and neat prizes for the students as well. We invite our grandparents to join us from 8:30-9:00 on Friday, September 9th to celebrate Grandparents Day with their grandchildren! We will have light pastries and students will have a little something special for those able to attend. Please email your homeroom teacher to let them know if grandparents will come and how many so we can make sure we are prepared. Student Council this year is off to a great start under the adult advisors of Mrs. Beck and Ms. Smallwood. They are giving back to the community with “PENNY WARS” Sep 6-30. Every classroom K-8 will collect money in their own “piggy bank” provided by Student Council to collect points! Add as many pennies and bills to your piggy bank to earn points. As a competition add silver coins to other classes to lower their amount of points! Money will be donated to the Red Cross!
